Safety Features to Look for in Baby Cribs

Homer: Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.

Important Design Safety Criteria for
Baby Cribs

They may be pretty, but those decorative wood cutouts on baby cribs could pose a real safety hazard. They could trap little fingers and other body parts and cause distress for a little one. Check and make sure the spaces between any slats are no wider than 2-3/8 inches from each other, to ensure baby’s head doesn’t get trapped in between.

A minimum height of 26 inches height from the top of the mattress support at its lowest position to the top of the crib side rails should be maintained, or pass on that particular crib, as it does not meet today’s safety standards.

When the baby is able to stand, lower the mattress to its lowest possible setting, and keep it there. Replace the crib once the child’s height exceeds the height of the top rail by one quarter of his/her height.

To be on the safe side, avoid
baby cribsthat were manufactured prior to 1974 as many of them do not meet safety standards.

Crib Mattress

There should be no gap that is more than the width of two adult fingers between the mattress and the crib. Any mattress that does not meet this safety criteria should be disposed of immediately, as a baby’s head or body could get trapped in that gap.

The mattress should be firm enough so that the baby does not sink into any part of it as he or she is sleeping or playing.

Crib Hardware

The sides of the crib should also meet rigorous safety features: The drop side(s) of the crib should require two distinct actions or a minimum force of ten pounds with one action to release the latch or the locks to prevent accidental release by the child.

The crib hardware should be checked for any broken or loose pieces. Special checks should be made of the mattress support hangers and brackets so they cannot drop. The hardware and the crib should be smooth and free of sharp edges, points and rough surfaces.

Babies spend the first few months of their tender lives in baby cribs, hence it is important to ensure that these are places that are comfortable, safe and nurturing for the baby.
